• 12-month parental leave cover
• Forward thinking, dynamic Crown entity
• Collaborative and supportive environment
• Focus on alternative dispute resolution
The Privacy Commissioner is New Zealand’s privacy regulator. An independent Crown entity, the organisation aims to be effective and modern in promoting and protecting individual privacy in New Zealand.
As a Senior Investigator, you will investigate alleged breaches of the Privacy Act 1993, with a view to facilitating settlement wherever possible. There is a strong emphasis on the use of alternative dispute resolution to resolve complaints. You will be involved in mediations and compulsory conferences. You will also be required to write objective, well-reasoned opinions about complaints and the results of investigations.
The team is looking for a true senior who can hit the ground running and be a leader amongst the group. Having strong analytical skills and sound judgement will be key. This role carries its own caseload and therefore you will need to have the ability to manage competing priorities, and have a results-oriented approach to work.
You are ideally already experienced with the Privacy Act and related legislation, and have had success at a senior level in a similar regulatory role, in the interpretation and application of legislation and legal principles, in undertaking comprehensive research or investigative work, in negotiation and problem-solving, in mediating disputes, in the use of alternative dispute mechanisms and/or in drafting complex legal opinions.
You will need excellent inter-personal skills; the confidence, maturity and ability to deal with a range of people from diverse parts of the community; be able to effectively analyse and apply the law to the facts of individual complaints; and have excellent communication skills, both oral and in writing.
The organisation will consider outstanding candidates who may not necessarily be suitable for appointment to a Senior Investigator role but very clearly have the relevant experience, skills and potential to be. In that event, it would appoint the position at an Investigator level. The position is not, however, an entry level role.
You will be rewarded with working in a progressive and innovative organisation where your voice is heard and your contribution is valued. It is a particularly exciting time to join the organisation as it is in a growth phase. New privacy legislation expected to be passed by Parliament very soon will add to its regulatory functions and powers at a time when privacy is very much at the forefront of social, business and legislative discourse.
Applications close: Wednesday 8 July at 9am.
