The Privacy Commissioner is New Zealand’s privacy regulator. The organisation strives to be an effective and modern regulator in promoting and protecting individual privacy and in delivering the best privacy outcomes for the highest public benefit. It operates in a rapidly evolving environment. Massive technological change in the last 25 years has generated new issues and challenges in the field of privacy and data protection. The new Privacy Act 2020 represents a critical step forward to address these developments and comes into effect on 1 December 2020.

The new and modernised Privacy Act gives the Commissioner a greater range of compliance and enforcement powers, including the ability to issue compliance orders and to make determinations about an individual’s access to their personal information. Businesses and organisations will have new obligations to report to the Commissioner and to notify affected individuals if things go wrong with the customer information they hold.

Working closely with the Assistant Commissioner, Policy and Operations, this new role leads the design and development of the Commissioner’s compliance and enforcement framework and strategy. It will establish, build and lead a new compliance and enforcement team and lead compliance and enforcement activities across the organisation, with a focus on encouraging and incentivising compliance and behavioural change.

Our ideal candidate will be a passionate people leader with a collaborative work style as the role works right across the organisation.

Ideal experience:

  • 5+ years’ experience in a senior compliance and enforcement role with proven success in developing and implementing compliance frameworks, systems and processes, and/or in the operationalising of regulatory functions
  • Proven experience in planning, implementing and leading complex investigations, compliance and enforcement activities
  • 3+ years’ people leadership experience with the proven ability to lead and mentor a high performing team and to create a team culture that promotes engagement, respects diversity, and ensures safe behaviours
  • Experience engaging with Te Ao Maori, in working in a regulatory environment or in privacy, and/or in leading the start-up of a new function or business activity is an advantage

You will be rewarded with working in a progressive and innovative organisation where your voice is heard, your contribution is valued, and you can make a difference.
